For those who are married, the perfect world would be to not get divorced. And should you have to get divorced, that it would be a quick, easy, and pain-free process. The reality of that is not true. District Court Judge John Roach and Attorney Laura Roach (husband and wife team) have seen too many people get hurt through divorces, especially ones that go to court.
As a solution, the two have taken on a personal mission to make the process easier for couples who are going through a divorce. They want divorce to become an amicable process and to save marriages where they can be brought back to life.
The husband and wife duo believe that the key to a good divorce is through mediation. John uses his experience in the 296th Judicial District Court while Laura uses her time as a partner at the firm Albin Roach PLLC to work people through the process of mediation.
Years have gone by and divorce cases always felt the same to the couple. The clients would go to court and they would be fearing the worst. Heartbreak, despair, and the fear of losing your life’s progress all weigh on a client. This weight can make them break down.
One of the key parts of mediation is that it relies heavily on communication. One of the hardest parts in a relationship is fair and honest communication. As such, some couples learn through proper mediation that all they needed in their relationship was good communication. Unfortunately, those people are only a small portion of the population.
However, for those that don’t find the key to their relationship through mediation will still find something in the process. Mediation is far less daunting than going to court. It is also a far easier process. Both facts work to make the process less destructive to both parties lives. It also helps to come up with solutions that compliment both sides of the divorce.
Mediation can sometimes be completed in a day while a relationship is ruined over a series of years and a court proceeding could take months, weeks, or in the worst case, years.
Together, the couple has put much work into bringing light to their solution to the divorce process. They have a website, Divorce In Peace (http://divorceinpeace.com). On this website, clients can connect with the professionals that they need to make a healthy divorce. Clients can also find counselors to help their children adapt to the process of divorce.
The process of using a counselor can help to ease the process for fearful children. It can also help them to realize that it wasn’t their fault.
As a team, the couple has also crafted a book to help lawyers and people going through divorce alike, realize that there is a healthy way to go through a divorce. The book is entitled, “Divorce in Peace: Alternatives to War from a Judge and Lawyer”.
At first, the couple wanted to only take on Texas divorce law with their book and help people get through a divorce in Texas. One case was all it took to change that, though.
Laura had a case in which she defended an MLB baseball player. Before going into the divorce process with Laura as his attorney, the player had spent over 1 million dollars in legal fees over a period of four months. Once Laura was on the case, that all changed. Laura brought the player and his former wife into mediation. With the power of mediation, the couple was able to settle with each other in only a matter of a couple of days.
That garnered the attention of the player’s agent. That agent spread the word of the couple’s method to all of her players. She also urged the couple to take the scope of their work larger. Moved by the request of the agent, the couple expanded.
But Laura only practiced in Texas, the couple wanted to provide help to people around the country. That was where their website came into play. It works for others as the medium through which people can connect with help.
While Laura and John’s method doesn’t always work, it can help a large number of people find a healthy alternative to court. For those that they help find a peaceful and happy relationship, those clients, are the ones that make it all worth it for the couple. It isn’t about the money, it is about changing people’s lives.
